My tournament success on Lake Amistad was all do to a soft plastic jerk bait called a SkippyFiSH. I had made the cut to fish the final day of the tournament and was sitting in 13th place. I needed a big jump to move up the standings. Schooling bass were the target and I needed the right presentation and bait. A 6” Threadfin Shad color SkippyFiSH helped me pull out the victory. In the morning we pulled into a small open water bay and bass were everywhere. I managed to put a small keeper in the box. Needing some more action after the first area slowed we headed to a brush filled area where the wind was funneling the bait and also the bass. With drift after drift and cast after cast, I was getting short strikes and missing fish so I tied on a 6” Threadfin Shad colored SkippyFiSH. A jerk jerk pause and sink retrieve on top of the brush was all it took. I saw it all happen, she came out of know were, striking my bait. She turned and headed for the bottom. A few breathless moments later I had her, a solid 4 pound fish. My knees were shaking as I tried to gain composure; I knew I had a chance to win the tournament. I added two more large fish as the day went on. My attitude and confidence were completely changed by the first big fish I caught. I’m sure glad I tied on a SkippyFiSH. This victory earned Jerry a new Triton TR186 and some cash totaling $35,000. Congratulations!
